Do You Know The Fundamentals Of Yoga Using An Eco Friendly Yoga Mat?
Jun 14th, 2009 by Dee Marie

The term yoga is an all-encompassing one that is used in reference to the many and varied philosophical and spiritual ideologies found in India. Here, in the western world however, the term yoga relates to the physical conditioning component found in yoga when it is defined in the Hindu context. For the Hindu practitioners, the physical component of yoga is meant to be used as a way of training and mastering the body to achieve spiritual enlightenment. For most yogis or yoga practitioners outside of India, yoga remains an excellent system for exercise, and the meditative quality is maintained though the spiritual connotations are lost. The practice of yoga as an exercise method requires a yoga mat without question.

While an eco friendly yoga mat is not strictly part of the ideological practices, they do provide many advantages and are thus fundamental to yoga as an exercise. They help provide degrees of comfort and stability for the yogi when he or she is executing asanas which is what postures are called in yoga terminology.

These are rectangular mats and they can be as long or almost as long as an average person's height. This length is useful in the execution of asana that require the yogi to sit or lie on the floor. A mat that is intended to be used for yoga must also be wider than the shoulders of the yogi using it, since feet and hands need to be placed a fair distance apart to create a strong bases for certain asanas. Mathematical and geometric laws tell us that the wider a structure is at the base, the more stable it will be and less likely to tip over. It is very usefull if you understand this concept when executing back bends, hand stends, and other balance-centric asanas.

Finding a mat to use for your yoga exercises can be a challenge, unless you have an idea of where to look. The World Wide Web is a good place to start, as it is with almost everything else nowadays. On the World Wide Web you can look up an eco friendly yoga mat, and you will be rewarded with a torrent of information such as brands and models, pictures, videos, and user reviews and testimonials. These can help you learn which brands and models are trustworthy and to compare prices. When you're looking, you will come across many elements that may appear tob value-added options but they are in fact very important.

One of these is the non-slip property of a yoga mat. Non-slip ensures that the mat stays firmly planted while the yogi performs asanas. The may not seem useful and important for seated and lying positions, but keep in mind standing and inverted positions and you will come to realize just how important non-slip is to safety. Ease of cleaning and care are also things you should consider, because they are things that can maximize the convenience of these mats. A worthwhile bonus is its Eco-friendliness. After all, one thing that yoga teaches us is to achieve harmony with the environment and ourselves, so why not help protect Mother Nature while you do about your routines? An eco friendly yoga mat is not exactly the most affordable of products, but seeing how useful they are in the practice of yoga, one realizes that they are worth more than the prices they are tagged with.

Add the Benefits of Yoga Blocks to your Yoga Props
May 20th, 2009 by Dee Marie

You’ll make sure to drop your yoga blocks in your yoga bag once you’ve found out about their many benefits to your practice. But, before we review the many benefits of yoga blocks, it’s a good idea to talk a little about the healthy aspects Yoga, itself.

The Benefits of Yoga

Yoga practitioners have found that habitual yoga practice awakens both mind and body! As you empty your mind to give your undivided attention to each pose, you awaken your “inner body” awareness of the present moment. Consistent yoga practice advances a healthy body through proper breathing for more oxygenation, greater flexibility for ease of motion, added muscle strength for confident movement, and perfect alignment for enhanced energy flow. The goal of yoga practice is to create a union between the body, mind and spirit.

You’ll need time and commitment, as well as a whole lot of patience, to master a yoga pose. No one is a master the first time they try to do anything. But, slowly over time, as you practice and try to perform each pose correctly, without pushing yourself too far physically or beating yourself up mentally, you will notice that you are developing flexibility, strength, and energy physically and feeling more peaceful and clear mentally.

The best environment for doing your practice is an uncluttered, peaceful place with a bare floor and practicable wall. Remove any distractions from your yoga environment. Ideally, you should not eat for at least 2 hours before practicing. If this is not possible, then try to eat something light, such as a piece of fruit, but no more than 1 hour before you start your yoga practice.

If you should feel pain or discomfort as you try a pose, pause or stop, then try again with more mindful movement.

Yoga props and accessories, such as yoga mats, yoga bolsters, yoga straps, yoga blocks, yoga mat bags, and even a yoga towel are made with the intention to aid you in moving deeper into a pose, in performing a flawless pose, and in practicing in a healthful way.

Good reasons to consider using yoga props:

  • Pain relief and body comfort
  • Prevent injury
  • Release tension and provide support
  • Encourage appropriate alignment
  • Ease and flexibility of movement
  • Open up the joints
  • Develop awareness and understanding

Yoga Blocks

Unfortunately, sometimes before a beginner can start to know the benefits to mind and body that yoga provides, discomfort in the effort to do some of the yoga poses will cause them to turn away from a life enriching yoga practice. Yoga blocks can assist anyone, but expressly those just starting out, to feel more comfortable during yoga practice because yoga blocks aid to improve alignment. For instance, when a standing pose includes one hand being on the floor, flexibility issues arise. In other words, the floor can seem a long way down for a beginner. Think of a yoga block as an extra extension to your arm. While a beginner is in the process of developing flexibility, he or she will still be able to do the standing poses accurately by positioning a hand on a block that’s been positioned appropriately on the floor. A yoga block is a wonderful transitional aid.  In addition, some sitting poses make use of a yoga block.  Yoga blocks help with balance, poise, and stability. Who could ask for more from something so “square.”

Yoga blocks come in a variety of materials. Here are three: Foam blocks are durable and lightweight, an manageable add to your yoga mat bag! Wooden blocks are also lightweight and hollow, yet virtually indestructible (even Fido would find one hard to destroy!). Lastly, there is the environmentally friendly cork block.  An additional bonus is that the natural texture of the cork gives some extra traction.

Yoga blocks are usually sold singly but, for versatility, you’ll likely want to buy several.

Obstacles Of Yoga
Apr 19th, 2009 by Dee Marie

Anyone embarking on the journey of yoga will face a series of obstacles, difficulties and detours. You will need to remove all of the following difficulties, noticed by yoga practitioners for a long time, in order to be able to fully benefit from the positive aspects of yoga. Here is a quick look at the nine major obstacles:

1. Vyadhi – This obstacle refers to physical or mental illness. Practicing yoga si even more difficult when you are not in great health. A balanced, healthy life style ensures victory on this obstacle, by preventing any form of sickness. 2. Styana – The second major difficulty related to yoga refers to an advanced state of apathy, which interferes with you willingness to commit to your responsibilities. We neglect and avoid practice by procrastinating and this, in turn, leads to coming up with excuses for not doing our work.
3. Sanshaya – One other major interference in the practice of yoga is related to the issue of doubting the benefits of practicing it. This problem also arises when faith in your own capabilities is low. This leads to a deviation from the original goals, making you more susceptible to outside interference.
4. Pramada – When lack of persistence and will is notices, the 4th yoga obstacle comes in place. Yoga requires a unique approach, as it is a combination of arts and sciences. If you practice yoga without the proper emotional and mental states, you may turn its positive aspects into negative ones.
5. Alasya – A lazy and inert state of mind and body will prevent you from receiving yoga’s full benefits. Most people have a hard time dealing with their own will power, creating the perfect conditions for this obstacle to appear. The road to success is hard most of the times and a strong will power can support your ascent. A passive approach, on the other hand, will almost certainly lead to a slow and ineffective advance.
6. Avirati – Physical objects hold a magnetic attraction to the majority of people. Yoga needs you to let go of these ropes that tie you to the material world and make progress in the realm of the spirit. Removing the weight of physical things is vital while practicing yoga.
7. Bhrantidarshan – Misunderstanding the path you are taking while practicing yoga can lead to disappointment. Avoid this by keeping your hopes in good contact with reality.
8. Alabdha-bhumikatva – We are often victims of our own discouragement. When a failure occurs we fall into a state of self-depreciation and low optimism levels. Failing to reach a step on your road to achieving your ideal can lead to aggravated forms of this obstacle.
9. Anawasthitatwa – Poor yoga practice may also lead to the incapability to reach and hold a higher level of consciousness. This can be frustrating and result in disappointment.

Overcoming these obstacles is possible by helping your mind to focus on single elements a one time. Do not allow any of these obstacles to increase in power, as the others will soon follow. The passing of time and a strong will and commitment is usually very effective in dealing with the 9 yoga obstacles.
