Types of Yoga

If you wanted to start yoga as a beginner, you have clicked the right link.

Hatha yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga in the western world. It is use of yoga postures or asana. Many people practice hatha yoga only for it physical benefit, unaware of the mental benefits it provides. However, the aim of hatha yoga is meant to be to condition the body, so that the mind can be prepared for other activities like spirituality and meditation. It is believed that when the body is in a good physical condition, the mind is free to concentrate on spiritual activities and renunciation.

All the physical asanas or postures come under Hatha Yoga and is the most widely practiced yoga types when compared to Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga etc.

For beginners, to start with you should be able to control your breathing so that you cardiac muscles can be stronger to support the other asanas you might perform at later stages. Also the breathing techniques are widely practiced all over the world to overcome problems like regular headaches, blood pressure control etc. Hence, we would start with the Anuloma-Viloma Asana and the Kapalabhati Pranayama.

Anuloma-Viloma Asana:

1. Sit in the right posture which is advised to be Padmasana. You can also choose a suitable posture depending on your convenience but sit erect.

2. Now, fold your pointing finger and the middle finger of your right hand. (Kumbhaka)

3. Sir erect, use your right hand’s thumb finger to close your right nostril and then take a prolonged inhalation through your left nostril.

4. Now hold your breath for some time, open the right nostril, close the left nostril with your right hand’s ring finger (because the pointing finger and the middle finger are closed in Kumbhaka)

5. Again, exhale (prolonged) through the right nostril. Change your fingers and nostrils and repeat the exercise continuously.

Note:

· Kumbhaka is a unique way of holding the fingers for the asana, but for the first six months you can hold your right nostril with your thumb finger and the left nostril with your pointing finger.

· If you cannot sit in Padmasana, adopt any comfortable posture; but sit erect.

Kapalabhati Pranayama:

Rapid exhalation and inhalation is Kapalabhati, well known as the destroyer of disorders caused by phlegm.

1. Spread out your yoga mat and sit erect in padmasana. If you find padmasana difficult, sit erect in normal sitting position (folded legs)

2. Place your hands on your respective knees.

3. Exhale the air inside your lungs forcibly(Passive inhalation)

4. After each exhalation, make a passive inhalation, which is very short and then again exhale.

5. Repeat the exercise continuously.

Note:

· It is a very useful exercise for asthama and constipation.

· Your lungs and liver become strong.

· Blood circulation and respiratory activities are taken care of.

· People who have diabetes do not practice it.

· Also, people who are suffering from ulcers in the stomach should not practice it.

These different types of yoga techniques will help a beginner learn the basics and to understand how to go ahead with other breathing exercises.

Did you know that nearly three hundred thousand children in the United States alone have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis? That is large number of kids and it continues to grow each day leaving parents baffled for treatment options. One method of therapy that has yet to be given the amount of credit it deserves is encouraging children to engage in practicing yoga disciplines.

A child that has arthritis is limited to what activities they can perform without feeling any pain. Most of these children cannot participate in team sports and they often times become lazy from their lack of movement. When these kids begin to practice yoga exercises it is not enough of a cardio activity to harm them, but it is enough of proper set of exercises to help their condition greatly. Yoga primarily focuses on the core section of the body. It works the abdominal muscles and the back as well to make them stronger without the need to lift any weights, perform any resistance training or utilize any machines. You simply move around in the set poses and hold them there for around a minute each pose and while you are in those poses you practice breathing techniques as well. The breathing techniques are what relaxes the yoga student and helps them hold the poses for longer periods of time.

Almost any child with or without arthritis can easily sit with their legs folded in an Indian style position, they can also generally bend forward and attempt to touch their toes. These are basic steps in practicing yoga. As the child progresses, they will increase the number of yoga poses they are able to participate in and begin to strengthen those core muscles and greatly improve their posture as well. Having poor posture is one of the leading reasons for chronic back pain. While a child sits and plays a video game or while they are sitting at their desk in school they have a tendency to not sit up straight and slouch their bodies forward. This causes pain in the back, neck and shoulders that can result in a permanent condition. By instilling yoga exercises in the children their posture automatically begins to increase and they will start to sit up right with a flat back after just a few weeks of yoga. The increased flexibility that yoga brings is another benefit for young children suffering from arthritis also. When you move your body into the poses a few days per week, it begins to become much easier to touch your toes and to stretch your frame in positions you could not even attempt before. The children will start to feel relief of their pains and they may even not need their medications anymore. This is the goal for any parent with a child that suffers from arthritis as you do not want to give your child any medication that their bodies do not need. Older children such as teenagers may enjoy taking a yoga class with a friend and for the younger students getting them involved in yoga exercises can be simple if you pick a fun yoga video just for kids.

Jesus is a yoga instructor. He has been working on a yoga program for kids with arthritis. He writes about his program on his website. He also covers other topics such as Basketball Defense Drills and Basketball Dribbling Drills.

The yoga and t’ai chi practice of imitating Power Animals is the oldest form of exercise known.

It is also a safe, fun, and effective way to combat childhood obesity-an epidemic growing faster than an uncontained wildfire!

David Katz of the Yale School of Medicine stated that “Children growing up today will suffer more chronic disease and premature death because of the way they eat and their lack of physical activity than from exposure to tobacco, drugs, and alcohol combined.”

It’s no secret children are eating much more high calorie, sugar and chemical laden, highly processed food than you and I did as children.

It’s also no secret that our children do not get the same amount of exercise at school or from daily walking and playing that you and I did as children!

Pretending to move, play, twist, turn, and freeze like Power Animals can provide a significant portion of the exercise your children need to be happy and healthy.

The Chi or vital energy generated naturally and easily while pretending to be a Power Animal literally “heats up” the body. It melts away bodily excesses!

Frolicking like a Power Animal is a natural fat fighter!

As your children mimic their favorite Power Animals, they are effortlessly taking on the animals’ natural, robust health.

That may be sleek and graceful like a deer, trim and strong like a tiger, quick and agile like a monkey, or bulky and powerful like a gorilla. But it won’t be overweight and out of shape.

According to recent studies, 10% of newborns to 2 year olds are overweight.

This increases to 20% of our children ages 2 to 5 and 30% of our children ages 6 to 11.

Over 15% of these overweight children are obese.

In a recent 25 year span of time, childhood obesity has quadrupled.

Even children under the age of 10 now have Type 2, or what was previously known as, “Adult Onset” Diabetes.

And this burden of weight isn’t something children outgrow! Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.

This burden isn’t just a physical problem either.

According to researchers, overweight children face tremendous, unrelenting bias from their peers, parents, and teachers as early as age 3.

So much so, that these children have a quality of life score comparable to children with cancer.

Overweight children are also more likely to suffer from depression, suicidal thoughts, asthma, orthopedic complications, brain tumors, low self esteem, gallstones, sleep and eating disorders, Type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure than children of normal weight.

According to one researcher, “They even feel like they are a different species.”

By encouraging your children to play like a Power Animal, their feelings of well being and self worth will soar like an eagle and help keep them from over indulging in food, bad habits, mood swings, and harmful substances.

Have you ever seen an obese animal in the wild?

Animal frolicking is a natural obesity obliterator!

Like animals in the wild, Power Animal children will start to naturally choose healthy living habits, exercises, fruits, vegetables, water, and other foods that are good for their body-provided, of course, you give them choices that include those beneficial exercises, foods, and liquids.

Ganeshananda has been developing children’s educational programs for over 20 years. He is the creator of Power Animal Frolics dvd-T’ai Chi/Yoga/Qigong for Children–and the author of over 44 Fairy Tales of the Heart for Children of all Ages. He is an AVESA Quantum Energy Master and Medical Intuitive; Usui Reiki, T’ai Chi/Qigong, Meditation Master; Ordained TOSA and Science of Mind Minister; and Certified Quantum Clairvoyant.

Yoga which is a rage in the western world was introduced by Indians in the 18th century. Yogic techniques are used by a lot of Hollywood stars and has now become a fashion statement. Yoga has now been customized to suit the needs of the masses which is very different from those who practicing it in ancient times. Yoga is popularly used in the following
1) Yoga for staying fit – Yoga involves a lot of physical exercises and breathing which help strengthen muscles and joints. It helps an individual stay very flexible because a lot of poses involve stretching. It helps us in maintaining a perfect body structure.
2) The Sports side of Yoga – Athletes not only require physical strength but also mental strength. The Indian cricket team uses this technique so that its players can handle tense situations. If an athlete is going through a bad phase , yoga can help gain his confidence to do well in the field
3) Therapy and Yoga – This technique has helped people cure chronic ailments like back pain. Those who suffer from asthma have successfully overcome this problem with the help of yoga techniques. Meditation can also help people concentrate. Even psychiatrics recommend students to meditate before a tense exam
4) Lifestyle Problems – Today’s life doesn’t give us the time to stop and smell the roses. People across all age groups lead a very hectic lifestyle. The improper way we eat is a testimonial on how we lead our lives. A working class family does not find time to take a holiday or go out on a vacation. Such a hectic life leads to a lot of problems like a heart disease , Blood Pressure etc. If one practices yoga, one can lead calm and a blissful life. It would be foolish of me to claim that provides a cure to all problems in life, but can help prevent a majority of diseases in a very cheap way.
5) Spirituality- Yoga is not about spirituality but it all about enlightenment. Gautama Buddha attained nirvana under the tree while meditating. Yoga tells about on how we need to be less consumerist and lead a simple yet cerebral way
A yoga follower aptly states yoga as” Witnessing the flow of mind: Witnessing your thoughts is a most important aspect of Yoga practice. Witnessing the thought process means to be able to observe the natural flow of the mind, while not being disturbed or distracted. This brings a peaceful state of mind, which allows the deeper aspects of meditation and samadhi to unfold, revealing that which is beyond, which is Yoga or Unity”.

Now days the term is “composite” Yoga adds two together to make a third that is better than either of the two separately. By blending posture and form
help heal the body and calm the mind. One can even say that a “transcendent”
state can be achieved which will enhance ones overall health.

Techniques of meditative breathing, important to your health, are an integral part of yoga exercises. Few other forms or exercise can match the mental and spiritual benefits achieved through consistent adherence to the discipline of yoga.

Among the health benefits of Yoga basics are a state of relaxation and in the overall well being will be achieve through practice of the forms and postures. The stretching exercises strengthen the body and makes it flexible. Although there are several difficult poses, many that may take months for the novice to perfect the simple ones help you attain the flexibility and health.

It is essential to develop a routine in your daily life for yogic exercises. Developing the routine will in itself cause a “grounding” of the practitioners’ soul, an overall calming effect on ones lifestyle can be realized. The duration of your workout should be such that it fits into your lifestyle in a way that is “doable” starting and stopping the program is disruptive and can lead to feelings of self deprecation as one can castigate oneself for failing to stay focused. Start with one small segment of time that you are sure you can do regularly maybe ten minutes is all you can devote, so be it just do it daily at the same time of day.
Studies show that if you do a thing daily for thirty days it becomes a habit. Once a habit is formed you may adjust the time according to your stamina level.

Start daily workouts by performing basic postures with light stretching and then can gradually increase the workout and finally achieve strenuous exercise. Few yoga poses can be learned or done quickly, study and engagement are the key watch words give yourself time to excel.

Fortunately Yoga basics can be learned with the help of books and DVD`s. A mat or heavy rug is the only equipment you need which makes the activity affordable to anyone of any age. A little floor space a little time and dedication and before long you can experience dramatic changes in your life and health. The ceilings should be high enough to enable you to raise your arms in different positions. Many practitioners have found the early morning amid peaceful surroundings on an empty stomach to be beneficial to the study and performance of yoga.

As you can see the benefits of yoga are not to be purchased at a cost such as gym membership, but invested in with time, patience, and self awareness. Let me take this moment to encourage you to begin a life changing habit of the pursuit of yoga and to thank you for ready my article. May you have a serene and joyful life on this earth.

Being a Householder Yogini provides ample opportunity to practice yoga without hanging out for hours in a large kula or cave! Here are my favorite opportunities to practice mindfulness and yoga while taking care of a household and family.

1) Cooking – Focusing your mind on your breath and body with awareness as you chop, dice or stir makes you present. Your heart adds to the pot gratitude to the earth for the food and love to nourish your family. Challenge your mediation and invite your children to help out. Focus on your breathing when the temptation to scream or yell in impatience arises.

2) Washing the dishes by hand – There is something so simple and pleasing about washing dishes. It saves time, money and energy, but it’s also satisfying to make something dirty clean again with your own hands. There is the silence of the plates, the sound of the water and getting to play like a child in warm, soapy water! Again, challenge your patient breathing by asking children to assist you. Find that inner peace and calm through breathing and patient mindfulness when they squabble, complain or break something. Your inner calm will rub off on them in time! I guarantee it! Your own calm and patience is reflected I the world! And eventually this becomes quality family time with one-on-one time with an individual child.

3) Gardening – There is great meaning in growing your own tomatoes, heirloom carrots and using what you grow in your home-cooked meals. You feel self-sufficient and know you won’t catch salmonella or pick up bad karma from the energy of slaves who were paid nothing to pick the food for you on some corporate farm. Heavy weeding can be a drag, but a daily visit to your garden to prune and pull a weed is actually very satisfying and provides a sense of accomplishment. This meditation puts you in deep harmony with nature and a sense of connection with all things.

4) Cross stitch, knitting, crocheting or sewing. I learned cross-stitching in Holland from my Dutch aunts when I was 14. It’s great concentration, relaxing to the mind, and you can create beautiful heirloom artwork! Sewing patchwork by hand is also a great concentration and focus, and you create beautiful pieces of clothing while expressing yourself. I never learned to knit or crochet beyond a basic stitch, but it’s on my list of things to do, as I want my kids to learn. It’s also a great survival skill to create hand-made clothing to sell if needed or give as gifts.

5) Sweeping – sweeping the porch of dust is symbolic of sweeping out the soul. It’s swooshing is satisfying and calming to the mind and soul! Curanderos use a broom for sweeping out disease and bringing in healing and change. I love sweeping with a simple broom, rather than a noisy vacuum or, god forbid, those ghastly noisy gas-engined leaf blowers. Bring mindfulness to your broom next time.

6) Housecleaning- OK, after awhile this gets really old, but sometimes out of financial necessity you must clean your own house. It has great mental rewards, as the body kicks in and the mind shuts down. Or you can ruminate over your issues while doing this rote work to find solutions to your problems. Get in some yoga in by throwing in a downward dog when you are exhausted. Remind yourself to engage mula bandha as you perform your tasks. Get grounded with squats as you clean the floor! Get into the cracks of your dirty kitchen floor and see if you can clean out whatever is kicking around in your unconscious and blocking you.

7) Picking up after your children. – Great yoga practice for squats again as you bend down to pick up after your children – sometimes hundreds of times a day. Again, bring that calm mindfulness into every day living by resisting the desire to explode and start screaming at your children. Instead resolve to withhold everything from your children until they start to pick up after themselves.

8) Singing to your children — There is nothing more pleasurable than singing to your children with them snug in your arms and lap. They love the sound of your voice, and you can use it as a mediation and vehicle for self expression. I love to sing the old favorites of Winken, Blinken and Nod, as well as Mockingbird and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Your kids never forget those songs and bring them comfort and security for years to come!

9) Reading to and educating your children – There is no greater reward than educating your children and knowing that you take full responsibility for it. It brings you closer as a family, and develops important relationships, caring attitudes and responsibility to one another. Again, those powerful impatient feelings of frustration may arise when your child won’t listen or can’t spell or read well, so you just breathe in with awareness that frustration and breathe out love and joy for your children’s success and individual learning style!

10) Walk everywhere – If you can, ditch your car. Unplug from the uniquely neurotic American habit of schlepping your kids around to on overscheduled psychotic sessions of soccer, violin lessons, karate and whatnot. Walk everywhere you can. Your body will gain lots of muscular fitness from the alignment you practice while walking with meditative awareness. You will help the environment and save a lot of gas money!

11) Ditch the TV, Women’s Magazines, Cell Phone – I haven’t read a women’s magazine in 7 years and have never felt so good about myself. I haven’t used a TV, except to watch the presidential debates or Olympics, in seven years and am proud that I have never seen a reality TV show or an OctoMom or somebody with tons of kids whose name escapes me and divorced her hubby too. My reality is clearer and more focused. I lost my I-phone this summer and did not replace it. I no longer check emails 100 times a day or look at breaking news. I just look at reality and breathe, and remember not to scream and yell at my kids! Just love them! You can too!

12) Your own yoga class and meditation practice– Taking daily time for yourself to have a personal yoga and mediation practice is essential for sanity and enlightenment! Socializing in a group class and working with a teacher is also important and exhilarating. Community and practice gives us strength not to yell and scream at our children! But breathe and love instead!

13) Surrender on Sunday days – Choosing days to just do nothing is the best! Food not cooked? No problem! (We call it “survival night” in our family.) Kids not bathed and the house is dirty? Who cares? Surrender and just let things be. That’s the best way to live as a Householder Yogini. You will find many ways to be thankful for it all, as you bask in the present moment and behold eternal joy and love in your heart!

14) Do something nice for yourself – Stop everything, take out the art materials and fool around with it by yourself on the kitchen table all weekend. Go hang out with the girlfriends, or go hike up the mountain alone. Be sure to take time out for yourself and listen to that voice within to be sure you are balanced and centered.

15) In the Grocery Checkout Lane – Here in Argentina, the grocery line can take you 45 minutes to get through. No cell phone to distract me, I just stand and breathe and observe those thoughts about flipping out and going back to the US. I instead practice my Spanish with my kids in line, and of course, it all passes and you are checked out and back home in no time.

So! The best place to practice mindfulness and yoga is in every day life! Showing up, paying attention, not being attached to the outcome and saying YES to everything!

Since 2000, Sydney Solis has been spreading the joy and wisdom of yoga and story with classes, performances, trainings and workshops internationally. From her children’s show on PBS to The National Association for the Education of Young Children to the Estes Park Yoga Journal Conference, Sydney enchants audiences of all ages with Storytime Yoga.

When teaching Yoga classes, the modern student is likely to question many aspects of Yoga.On the other hand, eco friendly mats are made of natural rubber from rubber trees.

Both pilates and yoga have their advantages; you really cannot go wrong participating in either one.Stand at the front of the mat, with feet together and arms to the side.

Yoga has always been evolving, but has now begun to advance at a rapid pace because of networking and technology.

When you watch the news objectively, faith is apparent in many of today’s political and religious movements.

At the beginning of each class, Yoga teachers often prompt students to set an intention for their practice.

Power yoga is an Americanized version of Ashtanga Vinasa yoga. This style of yoga moves much more rapidly between poses.

The concept of yoga goes far beyond the early ages and is a much wider concept than mere exercise or asanas.

And like the power of knowledge it can only be passed down but every individual needs to practice it to gain its full benefits.

Yoga can help you achieve peacefulness and a harmonious balance between your mind and body. There are hundreds of different yoga poses.

There are also different names for the same poses because the poses are named by the yogi who has designed that particular school of yoga.

Different parts of your body are in conjunction with each other. Once you get into the groove, you will find these exercises extremely relieving.

The position of asanas is one of the best of all applications in lubricating joints, toning the muscles, and massaging the body.

Here’s some insight: most students leave the yoga studio bewildered, overwhelmed, possibly in pain, exhausted and sweaty.

A lot many people in today times practice yoga for their well being , but do not know the history of yoga. The people in the west feel that this technique is a mysterious act of the east. The people in the east ridicule this as a crazy act performed by their forefathers. Yoga has lot more than meets the eye. A great deal of thought and research has gone behind the creation of yoga techniques.

Place of Origin
The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings, and is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, meaning “to control”, “to yoke” or “to unite. Translations include “joining”, “uniting”, “union”, “conjunction”, and “means. An alternate root from which the word yoga may be derived is “yujir samadhau”, which means “contemplation” or “absorption.
Yoga was founded by the Indus valley people in (3300- 1700 BC) as a physical and mental exercise. The people then followed this disciple to attain spiritual growth. These practices have been mentioned in the sacred texts of Upanishads. Yoga then encouraged the union of the external and internal self.

Yogis usually think of God as an impersonal, spiritual substance, coexisting with all of reality. Yoga has its mention in the Bhagavad Gita ( The Sacred Text of the Hindus) where there is an entire chapter dedicated to the practices of yoga In these chapters yoga is divided into three types which are:
1) Karma Yoga – Yoga of Action
2) Bhakti Yoga – Yoga of Spiritualism
3) Gnana Yoga – Yoga of Knowledge

The practices of yoga also find its mention in other traditions like Buddhism, Jainism and Islam. As its has been mentioned in such ancient text of the above mentioned religions, the practice has survived till date.

Yoga Today
Yoga practiced today s is very different from what it was practiced by the ancient people. Today yoga has not only become a thriving business but it has also become a fashion statement. Science has now proved that yoga can prevent and cure diseases and can help mankind lead a stress free life.

Yoga is ancient practice. Find out more about the history of yoga at http://yogamatreview.net

Yoga is a way of life. It is mainly concerned with maintaining a state of equanimity at all costs. All yoga schools of thought emphasize the significance of the mind remaining calm, because as the saying goes, only when the water is still can you see through it.

Yoga Darshan or Yoga Philosophy also happens to be a valid discipline of Indian metaphysics (Brahma Vidya).

It is the result of human wisdom and insight on makeup, psychology, ethics and spirituality collected together and skillful over thousands of years for the well being of humanity.

The basic idea of yoga is to unite the atma or individual soul with the paramatma or the Universal Soul.
