Calming Kids Yoga Teacher Certification | School Yoga Programs for All Teachers
March 5th, 2009 by Dee Marie

CALMING KIDS TRAINING PROGRAM

Continuing Educational Credits available:

University level, Local School District & Yoga Alliance.

Ahimsa Teaching ProgramCALMING KIDS (CK): Creating a Non-Violent World is an intelligent, fun, relaxing, and enlightening training for educational professionals, counselors, health care providers, yoga teachers, or interested parents.  Participants learn how to implement a non-denominational yoga program to increase concentration, communication, relaxation, and fitness, and to decrease violence and bullying for pre-school through high school level students.  The National Center on Education Statistics reported that 29% of schools considered bullying to be the most prevalent disciplinary problem.  Early intervention holds the most promise for reducing violence.

The CK training program presents a curriculum that inspires a positive, peaceful, physically strong, and self-confident attitude with a system of relaxed communication.  The CK tools ultimately lead to empowering children to manage their own feelings for self-preservation, in order to make them feel safe within themselves and their surroundings and to give them a greater capacity to succeed in school and in life.  The program’s emphasis is non-harming to oneself and toward others, learning to respect personal space, with a high level of concentration practices that enhance academics and cultivate non-violent behavior.

The CK program presents a concrete system that utilizes simple yoga concepts such as proper breathing, importance of alignment, concentration exercises, relaxation training, conflict resolution strategies, non-violent communication styles, yoga postures, and dances.  Participants will also find calming techniques useful for themselves, enablingthem to become an effective model for students.  The workshop provides a step-by-step curriculum that includes handouts and booklets explaining how to teach these practices to school-aged students.

A four-year research study with Boulder, CO students proved the efficacy of this program (see Research page).

Part A: CALMING KIDS for Pre-school and Elementary Age Students, 14 hours

The basic structure of the CALMING KIDS program is introduced. Participants are taught
to use yoga poses, songs, and games for preschool through lower elementary aged students.
Emphasis is placed on how to use yoga poses, breathing practices, and concentration techniques
to create calm, relaxed students. A non-violent communication model is introduced. Moving
onto explore techniques for upper elementary aged students, participants learn how to teach the
yoga concepts, integrate props, select hand-outs, assign homework, instruct simple yoga poses,
and use songs or dances. Non-violent communication and conflict resolution strategies are taught
using traditional bullying role-play scenarios.

Your Investment: $295

Part B: CALMING KIDS for Middle and High School Age Students, 14 hours

The basic structure of the CK program is adapted to fit the needs and concerns of older students.
More emphasis is placed on understanding and expressing the emotional body and in balancing
the adolescent. The non-violent communication model is further explored. Basic Ayurvedic (the
science of longevity) yoga techniques are introduced in order to understand how to work with
students of all ages.

Your Investment: $295

Part C: Practice teaching of the CALMING KIDS techniques, reflection journal, and
mentorship with Dee Marie, 7 hours

Participants are required to implement CALMING KIDS techniques with students for a total of
6 hours of teaching. Upon completion of the sample teaching, participants submit a journal with
their lesson plans and personal reflection to CALMING KIDS. A follow-up phone call with Dee
Marie then provides an opportunity to assess what worked well, what could be improved upon,
and to receive overall feedback and guidance.

Your Investment: $60

I am an Occupational Therapist and was wondering if this is a type of yoga I can do with children with special needs as well as typical children?
    Thank you

    Angela

      Angela,
The kids love the mind body connection. It’s not so much the poses that are the focus.
My answer to you is emphatically “Yes”.

Great, I have just completed my registrations and am looking forward to attending. What time does the class start on Friday and where exactly is it located.
      Thanks
      Angela

I’m wondering if there is an opportunity for this training or another training that you would refer me to that is similar in nature. I am a speech-language pathologist looking for additional training for children’s yoga, particularly with special needs children. I may be in the Denver area the weekend of April 30th or memorial day weekend this May. Any information or recommendations would help, I’m not having too much luck searching the internet. Thanks!

I can’t tell when/where your trainings are … do you have a listing of states/dates/times for the trainings? Thank you.
